BESIDE Team Publishes New Scientific Article on European Forest Certification

A new scientific article by BESIDE team members has been published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change. Written by Sofia Corticeiro, Gonçalo Brás, Ana Lillebø and Helena Vieira from BESIDE and Margarida Tomé from the Forest Research Center, the article entitled “Forest Certification and Economic Insights: A European Perspective” examines the current landscape and economic effects of forest certification practices across Europe.

It provides a comprehensive analysis of how certification standards such as FSC and PEFC affect economic returns, forest management and environmental sustainability. The research highlights the critical balance between economic viability and environmental responsibility and offers new perspectives on policy implications and sustainable forestry practices. By examining how certified and non-certified forestry practices affect both the environment and local economies, the authors present findings that contribute to ongoing discussions in sustainable land use and conservation science.

This publication underscores the commitment of BESIDE to advancing knowledge in sustainable forest management—a key step towards informed policymaking and industry practices that consider both ecological integrity and economic resilience.
