On 8 October 2025, the University of Aveiro hosted the 1st National Conference of the Portuguese Association for Science Management, an event co-organised by the newly established association and the University of Aveiro, including the Research Centres (CESAM, CIDTFF, CICECO, IT, INET-md) and the projects ERA Chair BESIDE, and Twinning projects Fonda, Supralife and EVCA .
The conference marked the official launch of the association representing professionals working in science, technology and innovation management in Portugal. The event brought together science managers from across the country, researchers, institutional leaders and policy-makers for a full day of discussion on the future of science management. The programme centred on key themes such as the strategic role of science managers, national challenges and opportunities, international best practices, and the evolving expectations of decision-makers in the Portuguese scientific system.
A highlight of the day was the round table hosted by the BESIDE ERA Chair Project, titled “What do decision-makers expect from the integration of science management in Portugal?”. This session gathered prominent national figures to reflect on how science management can strengthen research capacity, improve institutional performance and contribute to more effective science and innovation policies.
The BESIDE project is proud to have contributed to the organisation of this landmark event, which reinforced the importance of professionalising science management and building a strong, collaborative national community.
