BESIDE researchers participated in the 1st National Ocean Literacy Conference

On the 5th and 6th of December, the Centro Ciência Viva in Lisbon hosted the 1st National Conference on Ocean Literacy.

During the event, Mariana Almeida, a researcher from the BESIDE project, participated in the round table entitled Ocean Literacy, Blue Economy and Technology. Mariana shared data from an ongoing study on how Blue Economy concepts are being incorporated into Ocean Literacy initiatives, highlighting the importance of diversifying activities that promote the Blue Economy, emerging sectors and associated technologies. It also proposes expanding Ocean Literacy to economic and social dimensions, to better promote sustainable development.

Also at the event, Dionísia Laranjeiro presented a Children’s book for Ocean Literacy Actions, addressing the creation of children’s educational materials to promote ocean literacy among new generations, with the aim of raising awareness about the preservation of marine ecosystems in a fun and accessible way. This book is joint initiative of A-AAGORA and its sister project CLIMAREST. A-AAAGORA is contributing to the development of BESIDE research platform since 2023.

This conference brought together, for the first time in Portugal, the ocean literacy community, made up of schools, non-governmental organizations, research units, public institutions, companies, artists and athletes, in an environment of sharing and reflection on the present and the future of our ocean.
